The owners of the popular Southern Gourmasain food truck wanted to open a bricks and mortar restaurant and turned to the WER team. Southern Gourmasain is well-known for their fusion of Asian-influenced Southern cuisine and are very proud of their food-truck roots, but wanted to branch out into a full restaurant experience with lunch service and evening “date-night” dining. The WER design team was asked to bring the food truck familiarity to the restaurant while giving guests a more complete dining experience. Blending the influences of Southern and Asian food styles was a tremendous challenge. The owners identify more closely with their Asian brand but still wanted touches of the South. We located a source for reclaimed barn wood from Arkansas and Tennessee and incorporated the wood detail throughout the space – including “pallet pagoda” over the banquette and the dramatic “bird nest” ceiling design. The client requested that the restaurant also have a clear lunch line for day patrons, but did not want that space to be awkward for night service. We designed a low divider wall to create a space for a line during lunch service that does not impose on the space for dinner service. The overall space is fun, inviting and great day or night. Southern Gourmasaian received two 2015 ASID South Central Awards – Commercial/Budget Conscious Gold and Custom Detail Silver for the Bird Nest Ceiling.
